RURA hosts a National Workshop on Nuclear and Radioactive Material at Major Public Events

Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) together with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) host a National Workshop on Responding to Criminal or Intentional Unauthorized Acts involving Nuclear and other Radioactive Material at Main Venues and other Strategic Locations of Major Public Events.

Speaking at the opening of this workshop, the Acting Director General of RURA, Eng.Deo MUVUNYI stressed the importance of this workshop, as Rwanda is committed to becoming a regional hub in terms of hosting international conferences and meetings.

''Rwanda continues to view nuclear security with utmost importance and appreciate the continued support by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which aims to strengthen the effective nuclear security regime in Rwanda especially nuclear security during major public events. We are working with different international partners like IAEA, to build and strengthen capabilities to prevent, detect, and respond to radiological and nuclear threats.'' Said MUVUNYI

He added:'' Adequate cooperation should be enhanced to ensure nuclear smugglers and their networks are uncovered, apprehended, and held accountable. This will be enhanced through building adequate infrastructure, acquiring enough detection equipment, conducting training like this one to acquire an adequate number of personnel as well as having a well strengthened regulatory infrastructure.''

"We thank the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)for a great support to member states and Rwanda in particular, to ensure this area is strengthened in consideration of its sensitivity. Rwanda recognizes and fully supports the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) central role in enhancing and strengthening nuclear security.'' Said MUVUNYI

Speaking on behalf of the IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security, the Unit Head of Institutional Response Infrastructure, Mr. Nigel TOTTIE reminded participants that the responsibility for nuclear security rests entirely with each State.

''The IAEA is proud to support States such as Rwanda in your efforts to establish and maintain effective and sustainable nuclear security systems and measures, including those focused on Major Public Events. The IAEA is committed to the development of international nuclear security guidelines and the implementation of these guidelines through the delivery of nuclear security workshops and training events.'' Said Mr. TOTTIE
